A “Hobbit” Inspired Pub Opens In New Zealand

Welcome to The Green Dragon Pub, a Hobbit inspired tavern self proclaimed as “a place to drink, a place to meet, and a place to rest your hairy feet.”

The Green Dragon officially opened for business two weeks ago, and since then has been pleasing LOTR fans across New Zealand’s country side. Located on set near the town of Matamata, the structure has been built since 2002. It`s the actual pub used in filming for the LOTR trilogy as the ‘Shire Inn’, a bar frequented by Frodo and the fellowship.

Over the past few months, a team led by project manager Brian Massey brought the building up to habitable code, and installed a working pub and other notable Hobbiton features. His work has made The Green Dragon a real destination for LOTR fans worldwide, and for that the fellowship thanks him. Beyond the production crew, a notable mention should be given to the Alexander family, the owners of the property that the set is built upon.
