This is Darvaza, Turkmenistan. As you can see, there’s a hole in the ground, a hole that’s on fire. It’s been on fire for over 40 years.

The story goes a little bit like this…

In 1971 there was a drilling rig collapse, it created the hole you see before you. In order to burn off the excess natural gas, geologists decided to torch the hole.

It was expected that the fire would only last a few days, yet 40 years later the flames still burn.

Locally this spot is known as “The Door to Hell”.
